As a teen, it can be hard to get money and a job. I remember being frustrated because I needed money and would end up begging my parents for cash, I also tried so many things to earn money without success.

After trial and error, I have found some legit, free, and easy ways to make some money. These methods are perfect for teens 13 and up.

Beyond a Lemonade stand or Babysitting

So, what are some ideas for a business beyond a lemonade stand or babysitting? Here goes:

A cleaning service. Maybe you hate doing your chores at home, but getting paid for doing them is completely different! You could offer complete housecleaning services, or specialize in one or more areas,
such as attic/basement/garage cleanups.

A yard maintenance service. There is always something that needs to be done…mowing lawns and weed control in the spring and summer, raking leaves in the fall, and shoveling snow and planting for the spring in the winter.

A car-detailing business. With so many people working multiple jobs and having such busy lifestyles, very few people have the time to really take care of their cars -- and you could offer a weekly or monthly service of washing, waxing, vacuuming, etc.

A pet sitting service. Typically more of a summer business when people tend to go on vacation, but you might be able to have a year-round business by offering pet walking, bathing, cleaning, etc. services.

A PC tutor/Web site development service. Are you a whiz with computers and the Web? Well, many adults are not, and you could make a good business helping people learn to use PCs and develop Web sites for their families -- or for their businesses.

A catering service. Do you enjoy cooking and baking? In these busy times, if you can provide a service that offers well-cooked meals, you could do quite well.

A painting service. If you have some experience -- or there is a few of your friends that want to go in business with you -- you might consider a painting business. People are always renovating…and you could paint exteriors in the nicer months and interiors during the colder months.

An errand, messenger, or delivery service. This idea works best in larger cities where there are more people and public transportation, but these are busy times and people need help with all sorts of errands.

An educational tutoring service. If you have expertise in one or more areas -- music, foreign language, math and science, or others -- you could offer tutoring sessions to children, teens, and adults in your neighborhood.

Another great way to get some extra money, is to cash in the lose change and coins you have. Search your house for change, Quarters, nickels, dimes, and pennies. Then take them to a coinstar machine at a super market and cash them in. You can also cash them in at the Bank.

I usually ask my dad for his change, and then place it in a jar, at the end of the month I cash it in. If I see a penny or any coin anywhere, I pick it up, on the street, at school, at the store, it all adds up.

I once made 35.00 from all the coins I had saved up.

You can start with ESL programs your school already has, or check libraries that have ESL programs. Also you can go on your own, start a mini business teaching people English. Make flyers and post them and spread the word.

Here is a quick tip on how to gain advantage in a Job interview.

Early in the interview, ask the interviewer, "What are you most looking for in the person you hire for the job?" and "What would be my first priorities on the job?" The responses you get will help you tailor your answers in the interview to what the employer wants. At the end of the interview, ask, "Based on what we've gone over today, I feel good about this position. Do you have concerns about my ability to do this job?" This will allow you to rebut any objections that the interviewer brings up.

So, you are ready for your first summer job. You march into the local mall food court and fill out ten job applications.

The best place to get a work permit is through your middle school or high school administrative office. Even when school is out your school should have someone on staff with the work permit forms and the answers to your questions.

What Do I Need?
You will need proof of your date of birth - a passport, driver's license, ID card or birth certificate. You will also need the signature of your parent or guardian. Depending on where you live you may also need a copy of your report card during the school year. Some schools will not let you get a work permit during the school year if you are not doing well in school. Each school, county and state across the country might have its own rules and regulations you will need to follow.
